Berkshire local authorities recognised the need to take a more coordinated and evidence-led approach to digital infrastructure, digital inclusion and emerging technology across their six-council region.
The approach needed to bring together several connected areas, including digital exclusion mapping, connectivity strategy, IoT opportunities and place-based analysis. With national programmes, supplier activity and local priorities all continuing to evolve, the councils required practical support to turn insight into clear delivery actions.
We worked closely with Berkshire partners to develop a clear digital connectivity strategy. We set out a structured approach to digital programme implementation, bringing together data, strategy, stakeholder engagement and delivery planning.
We supported digital exclusion mapping, set out the region’s IoT opportunities, and provided analysis through the Digital Places programme. We helped to create a clearer picture of local challenges, priority areas and the actions needed to support residents, businesses and public services.
Berkshire councils had a strong evidence base for digital infrastructure and inclusion across the region, including mapping of areas at greater risk of digital exclusion, identified connectivity gaps, giving them the means to define practical recommendations to address local priorities.
Our work helped partners consider how IoT and connected technologies could support wider place-based outcomes, including public services, infrastructure management and future innovation.
Through the Digital Places analysis, we provided further insight into mobile connectivity challenges and opportunities, helping Berkshire partners to better understand where intervention may be needed and how activity could be prioritised. For the first two priority locations, we provided the means for DIG to broker meaningful engagement between communities and mobile operators to deliver a pathway for real connectivity improvement.
Berkshire local authorities are better equipped to make informed decisions, engage with stakeholders and align digital activity with wider economic, social and public service priorities.
